Hey it might be good but right now I just want my familiar WP Classic Editor back, thank you very much. It is rather annoying to be faced with that overly large, fancy, new WordPress Block Editor as the automatic default editor and return to the familiar Classic Editor.
So without more ado, let’s get get rid of the WP Block Editor (don’t worry, you can get in back at anytime in the future should you feel perverse .. or enlightened, as the case may be).
Steps:
WP Admin Dashboard >> Settings >> Writing >> Default editor for all users >> (select) Classic Editor >> Save Changes
This will now set your default editor.
Changing Editor Per Post
However if you only want to change the Editor for a particular post you are working on, then
go to:
More icon (three vertical dots at top right of WP screen) >> Switch to Classic Editor
Now that is what you do when you are switching from Block Editor to Classic Editor. You will do something slightly different to move back from Classic to the Block Editor.
Switch from Classic Editor to Block Editor
When you are in the Classic Editor mode, to switch to the Block Editor, look to the right panel and scroll right down. Then click the “Switch to Block Editor” link.
Footnote:
OKaaaaay … I may have been a bit harsh about the block editor. I actually used the Block Editor to write this post. So … hmm … ok. Yes, there may be some really nice features to it. So if you have the time and/or are in the mood, you might want to give it a go. I will do that too I think. When I have the time. But at least we now know how to quickly change from the Block Editor to the Classic Editor and vice versa.
Recommendation
No, the Block Editor has not worn me over. I have been working with it for a couple of hours now. And while it does made some parts easier (e.g. editing html of specific parts – you can do this very specifically without having to search the correct text that you want to modify), there are important parts of my work where the Block Editor fails dismally.
In particular — Image Galleries. It can’t do it. It does not give you the usual options (e.g. Thumbnail, Tiled Mosaic, etc. ; drag and drop to rearrange images; what to link thumbnails to; etc.) Neither does it allow you to edit the image gallery once you have created and placed it onto your page.
So as of this March 2019, the Block Editor gets my thumbs down. It may improve in the future.
